How Do We Know the Bible is Inspired?

Painted Vegetables

When I talk to other Christians, I sometimes ask them how they know the Bible is the inspired Word of God. I've had several Christians tell me that they know the Bible is the inspired Word of God because the Bible itself says it is. Do you agree? If not, and you're a Christian, how do you know that the Bible is the inspired Word of God?

  1. The Bible does not teach that we are by chance, or that morals and values are up to each individual. God's Word is consistent and does not teach compromise, or that we go through life doing things that just make us feel good.

The Bible itself makes claim to being the inspired Word of God, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16).

  2. If we can know that the Bible is inspired because the Bible itself says it is, Rebecca, what is to prevent any other book from claiming inspiration? In fact, other books already do (the Book of Mormon, for example). There has to be an outside, objective authority that declares the Bible to be the inspired Word of God. That authority is the Church founded by Christ Himself. It is the Church that determined which books are inspired of God and belong in the Bible.
